This WINE PICK of the month was written for the Luke's of Cape Cod website.
Austria: the beautiful German-speaking country known for Mozart, wienerschnitzel and lederhosen. For beverage production other than Red Bull, they also make excellent wine. The Zweigelt grape was created in the 1920's by crossing the St.-Laurent and Blaufrankisch grapes, but now it's the top red grape of Austria. This one is unoaked and from the Weinviertal region.
The color of the wine is a beautiful, translucent cherry red. The nose reminds me of Swedish Fish (a lingonberry flavored gummy candy) with spices and pepper, and the mouth has flavors of morello cherry and cranberry. The body is on the light side, the tannin is present but not demanding, and the acidity is high. It leaves you with a silky coating in the mouth, giving a lengthly finish of fruit punch.

This is a red wine that feels right at home during the hot summer months. It can be paired with anything that comes off the grill, including seafood, but it goes best with warm nights on the patio. A slight chill is suggested but not needed.
