Established in 1978, the Rose family estate vineyards are situated on the banks of the Waiau River. "We maintain 100% control from beginning to end," says Oener Phil Rose. "We grow all of our own grapes, reserving the best for our wines." The Southern Alps mountain range runs the length of most of the island and creates a ran shadow in the region, reducing rainfall and clous cover. Marlborough's maritime climate makes for pelntiful, but not intense, sunshine which affords the grapes a long, slow ripening period.
Wairau River's 2016 Pinot Noir is made of 100% of the varietal. It was harvested during cool mornings, cool soaked for four days in open fermenters, then transferred to French barriques for ten months. It has an ABV of 13.5% and will cost you $25.

The color of the wine is a beautiful rose red, and it has more depth than I was expecting it to. I figured that I'd be able to read this review through the wine. On the nose there's aromas of cherries, strawberries, cream, leather, and black table pepper. On the palate it's light to medium bodied with a silky mouthfeel, soft tannin, and just a little pep to its acidity. There's flavors of raspberries, cherries, spices, and oak. Then it finishes crisp with raspberries, vanilla, and black table pepper.
This is a very enjoyable Pinot Noir for the price, and because of its versatility it would be a great choice of wine for Thanskgiving dinner. Gobble gobble!
