Wine Review: Ventisquero "Grey" Glacier Carménère 2014

Back in February of 2016 I reviewed the vintage before this one, the 2013 vintage. It's quite an amusing review if I do say so myself, featuring a little history about Carménère and my opinion of it. I've actually reviewed four wine by Ventisquero on this blog before, so click here if you want to see all of them. This coming Thursday I'll also be reviewing the 2017 Garnacha Carinena Mataro blend.

The 2014 Carménère is 100% Carménère from their Trinidad Vineyard in Maipo Valley. Only 50% of the grapes are ground, and a pre-fermentative maceration is made at about 8° for 5 days, when the temperature starts to rise, fermenting between 22 to 25°C. After about 32 days, it's transferred directly into French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and 18 months of aging. 34% of the oak is new, and 66% is of second or third year. Then it spends 8 months in the bottle before being released. The ABV is 14%.

Sammy Hagar, I Can't Drive 55
UH.... SAMMY? YOU OK?
It's been awhile since I've done a music selection so tonight I'm writing this review to the tune of some 1980's rock! Sammy Hagar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Quiet Riot, hell friggin' yeah! What a great decade for music, right? Just look at those outfits. Just listen to those guitars. Go take a look at my music selection playlist on YouTube because tonight we ain't lookin' for nothin' but a good time!

The color of the wine is a deep dark red with a purple hue. And OOOF! What a loud nose you have! Almost as loud as the Red Rocker himself! ***FIFFFTYYY FIIIIIIIVE!!!*** Blackberries, black cherries, sweet spices, and earth just waft out of the glass like it's a fog machine at a Def Leppard concert. On the palate it's medium to full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel, dusty tannin, and charismatic acidity. For flavors there's a pyrotechnic explosion of blackberries, along with black cherries, cocoa powder, and brown sugar. Then it finishes with black cherries, wood, and that dusty tannin.

This wine has plenty of the #1 thing I appreciate the most when reviewing wine: character. That doesn't mean that it has to be highly expressive because character can be about subtlety and nuance too, but this one happens to be highly expressive. I picked a good wine to match with this music selection, because this wine is loud and it wants to party. But it's also some good quality juice for a $20 Carménère.

QUALITY VS PRICE RATING
Price: $20
Rating: 4/5 = Recommended (what does that mean?)

The bottle used was provided free of charge for the purpose of this unpaid review. To have your wine reviewed follow this link.

  1. When I'm bored or working out, I always listen to music, but internet access isn't always available. Additionally, when I go hiking, there's no internet in the forest or mountains, so I make an effort to download my favorite tracks. For instance, a friend recommended the site ytmp3, where I can convert all the tracks from YouTube to mp3 for free, without the need to download programs or register on websites.
