Owned and run by Béatrice and Jean-Michel Drouin since 1979, Domaine des Gerbeaux is located in the village of Solutré-Pouilly. Their families both come from a long line of winemakers and they own a total of fifteen acres of vineyards over different regions in the Mâconnais; from St. Véran, to Pouilly, to Solutré. All of their wines are biodynamic but aren't biodynamic certified.
This is 100% estate farmed Chardonnay from 30 year old vines 1400 above sea level, was completely unoaked, spent six months aging in stainless steel, and saw full malolactic fermentation.
The color of the wine is a light gold. The nose has melon and pear with a slight minerality, some floral notes, a piece of Tic-Tac shell, and a chunk of drying Autumn grass. On the palate it's medium bodied with a creamy and rich mouthfeel, a medium acidity, and a little bit of astringency. For flavors it keeps things simple with peaches and pears, and bursts into sour apple on the bright and tart finish.
I'm not so sure I'd want to drop $20 on this if I was drinking it just by itself, but I would absolutely be on board dropping $20 on it when pairing it with food. Seafood! Oysters, steamers, fish & chips? Oh hell yeah! Or poultry! Chicken piccata? Grilled herb-rubbed chicken? Yup and yup! Food wine!
